When to use
  • Space-themed content that needs emotional warmth rather than sterile sci-fi coldness
  • Game trailers or content for exploration, mystery, or discovery-loop games targeting thoughtful adult audiences
  • Brand work for science, space exploration, or natural wonder topics that benefits from handcrafted visual intimacy
  • Music content for folk, ambient, or introspective artists where the 'small figure in vast but warm universe' metaphor applies
  • Editorial or documentary work about impermanence, cycles, knowledge-seeking, or cosmic mystery
  • Any project where the visual message is 'the universe is a place worth exploring' rather than 'the universe is terrifying'
When not to use
  • Military, action, or combat sci-fi content where the gentle handcrafted warmth conflicts with genre conventions
  • Hard sci-fi projects requiring photorealistic space rendering and engineering accuracy
  • Horror content that needs the cold void of space as a threatening backdrop
  • High-energy game or brand content where the meditative pacing of the watercolor space aesthetic creates unwanted stillness

Signature techniques

  • 01
Hand โ€” designed, non-procedural planetary surfaces: every terrain feature deliberately placed, giving a crafted tactile quality
  • 02
Oil โ€” paint and gouache surface texture: environment materials read as painted physical models rather than rendered geometry
  • 03
Planet color identity system โ€” each world has a dominant hue making navigation and emotional recall intuitive
  • 04
Intimate solar system scale โ€” planets are neighborhood-close, visible as warm colored spheres from starting location
  • 05
Warm amber sun lighting treating space as a home environment rather than a cold void
  • 06
Campfire โ€” scale human civilization: Hearthian technology is rickety, improvised, and warmly imperfect
  • 07
Bioluminescent dark โ€” zone contrast: Dark Bramble's total darkness punctuated by alien glowing fauna

History & context

Outer Wilds - Watercolor Space

Outer Wilds (Mobius Digital, Annapurna Interactive, 2019) is an exploration and mystery game about a young Hearthian astronaut trapped in a 22-minute time loop within their solar system. It began as a USC master's thesis project by Alex Beachum and grew into one of the most critically praised games of the decade, earning a BAFTA for Best Game in 2020 and occupying the top spot on several 'best games ever made' lists.

Handcrafted Rather Than Procedural

The solar system in Outer Wilds contains only six inhabited planets plus a handful of companion objects - the entire explorable universe is smaller than the starting planet in many open-world games. Every meter was hand-designed by a small team. This deliberate smallness is a visual philosophy: each surface looks made, not generated. Textures have a rough, tactile quality that evokes oil paint or gouache applied to physical models. Sandy deserts have lumpy surface irregularity; wooden Nomai structures have the visible chisel marks of carved sculpture.

Planetary Biome Color Identities

Each planet has a dominant color identity. Timber Hearth is warm autumn orange and brown. Ash Twin and Ember Twin are desert orange and burnt red. Brittle Hollow is cool slate grey-purple. Giant's Deep is oceanic deep blue with violent green hurricane systems. Dark Bramble is pitch black with bioluminescent thorn corridors. The Quantum Moon shifts. These color identities make navigation intuitive and each destination emotionally distinct.

Space as Intimate Environment

Conventional space games render outer space as an infinite cold void. Outer Wilds renders it as a warm amber-lit neighborhood. From Timber Hearth, you can see Ash Twin spinning against the starfield with the comfortable proximity of a neighbor's house. The sun is warm and bright, not harsh and distant. This decision - treating the solar system as a home rather than a threat - creates an emotional warmth alien to most space games.

Music by Andrew Prahlow

The folk-banjo score by Andrew Prahlow is inseparable from the visual aesthetic. The opening theme 'Travelers' - played around a campfire with Hearthian musicians - establishes the handmade, human-scale quality that the visual design sustains throughout.
