Spiritfarer (Thunder Lotus Games, 2020) arrived as one of the most emotionally sophisticated games of its decade, using a hand-drawn painterly aesthetic that functioned as an extension of its thematic content. As a management game about ferrying souls to the afterlife and confronting grief, Spiritfarer required a visual language warm enough to invite emotional engagement while honest enough to hold the weight of mortality. The cozy game genre - which includes Stardew Valley, A Short Hike, and Animal Crossing - uses warmth, safety, and abundance as aesthetic promises. Spiritfarer participates in this genre while quietly undermining it: the warmth makes the grief scenes more affecting, not less. The painterly cozy aesthetic is doing double duty.
