Fall Guys: Jellybean Character Aesthetic

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (Mediatonic, 2020) introduced one of the most distinctive character designs in recent game history: the 'jellybean' — a round, ovoid body approximately one-third head, one-third torso, and one-third costume, with stubby minimal limbs that are clearly inadequate for the athletic demands placed on them. Lead character designer Oliver Hindle and art director Ash Kerins developed this form to achieve a specific balance: small enough to be cute, simple enough to be costume-layerable, physical comedy potential maximized.

Form as Comedy

The jellybean body's fundamental visual joke is the disproportion between the body's spherical softness and the frantic athletic demands of the game. A jellybean running is inherently funny. A jellybean falling is funnier. A jellybean attempting a precision balance challenge on a beam and tumbling is the game's entire visual emotional palette in one moment. This is the Keaton/Chaplin slapstick principle applied to character design: create a body that is physically unsuited to everything it will be asked to do.

The small face — two round white eyes and a minimal mouth — on a large round head means facial expressions are simple and broad. This simplicity allows the costume system to be the primary character identity layer rather than the face.

The Costume System

Fall Guys' commercial model (and enormous cultural footprint, particularly during its free-to-play transition in 2022 after Epic Games acquisition) is built on the costume system: hundreds of upper and lower body cosmetic items that can be layered on the jellybean form. The body's simplicity is a costume system constraint — it must work as a neutral base for everything from a hotdog suit to a dinosaur costume to a branded collaboration skin (the game has licensed collaborations including Sonic the Hedgehog, Doom Slayer, Godzilla, and hundreds of others). The round, neutral-colored body ensures every costume reads clearly.

Palette and World Design

The Fall Mountain world uses a bright, crayon-primary palette: vivid pink, orange, cyan, and yellow with white foam obstacles and confetti-strewn arenas. This maximally cheerful visual environment reinforces the low-stakes, 'elimination is funny not devastating' emotional register that distinguishes Fall Guys from the anxiety-producing battle royale genre it parodies (it was designed as a parody of battle royale games generally).

Influence and Cultural Moment

Fall Guys launched in August 2020 during global COVID-19 lockdowns and immediately became a cultural phenomenon with 2 million concurrent players in its first week. The jellybean aesthetic appeared in fan art, memes, and video content across every major platform, demonstrating the design's exceptional virality—it photographs well, draws easily, and reads clearly at thumbnail scale.
