Modern Donghua: Chinese Animation's Contemporary Aesthetic

Donghua (Chinese animation, literally "moving pictures") underwent a dramatic quality and artistic evolution in the 2010s, producing works that challenged Japanese anime's global dominance in East Asian animation for the first time. Driven by Chinese streaming platforms (Bilibili, iQIYI, Youku) willing to invest in theatrical-quality television animation and a generation of Chinese animators trained on both Japanese techniques and classical Chinese visual art, modern donghua has developed a distinctive aesthetic that synthesizes traditional Chinese artistic traditions with contemporary digital production methods.

The Bilibili Generation (2015-Present)

The catalytic production is Scissor Seven (Sike: Bing Feng Xi Liu Liu, Aha Entertainment, 2018-2021), but the aesthetic breakthrough came with The King's Avatar (Quan Zhi Gao Shou, Photon Workshop, 2017) and especially Fox Spirit Matchmaker (Hu Yao Xiao Hong Niang, Haoliners Animation, 2015). The decisive moment was Ne Zha (Beijing Enlight Pictures, director Yang Yu, 2019), a theatrical film that earned 5 billion RMB domestically - at the time the second-highest-grossing Chinese film of all time - and demonstrated that donghua could match Japanese theatrical animation at the highest production tier.

Classical Chinese Visual Traditions in Modern Donghua

The most distinctive element of premium modern donghua is its integration of traditional Chinese visual art forms into animation design. Chinese ink-wash painting (shuimo hua) informs background art: misty mountain backgrounds, fluid water rendering, and negative space usage that differs fundamentally from the detailed photorealistic background painting of Japanese anime. Calligraphy-influenced line work appears in title design and FX animation. Traditional Chinese costume design - hanfu layering, embroidery patterns, jade and silk textures - receives extraordinary rendering detail that signals cultural specificity.

The Studio Behind Heaven Official's Blessing (Tian Guan Ci Fu, Bilibili / Haoliners, 2020) based on Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novel, and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (The Untamed animated version, B.CMAY Pictures, 2021) brought BL-adjacent narrative conventions into the mainstream donghua aesthetic, targeting the enormous domestic audience for Danmei (Chinese boys' love) novels.

Technical Infrastructure

Modern premium donghua is primarily produced in full CGI rather than the 2D cel-animation heritage of Japanese anime. Studios including Bilibili's in-house animation division, Samsara Animation Studio (Link Click, 2021), and Haoliners develop proprietary or adapted 3D pipelines that use toon-shading and ink-outline post-processing to approximate 2D aesthetic while achieving the production efficiency of 3D. The result is a distinctive look - slightly more volumetric than hand-drawn anime but visually richer in environmental lighting.
