The video podcast is the long-form interview shot with multiple cameras and edited like television. Joe Rogan's show is the cultural anchor of the format; thousands of imitators have copied the studio setup, the lighting, the desk, the multi-cam edit.
Why video on top of audio? Because YouTube became the dominant podcast discovery platform around 2018, and audio-only podcasts cannot compete in YouTube's algorithm against video ones. Putting cameras on the same conversation triples its reach.
The craft of the video podcast is conversation choreography. Three cameras minimum: a two-shot wide, and a single on each speaker. The edit lives in the cuts between singles during a question, a reaction, a pause. Sound is the actual content; picture is the retention mechanism.
Long-form interview content. Topic shows. Audience-builder for personality-driven brands.
Short-form audiences. Topics that don't have hours of conversation in them.
