The safe area is the portion of the frame guaranteed to display on any TV or platform, regardless of overscan, cropping, or aspect-ratio conversion. Critical information - text, faces, action - should live inside it.
Historically the safe area existed because CRT television sets cropped the edges of the broadcast signal. Modern flat panels don't, but the convention stuck - because now we have a new cropping problem: platforms.
A 16:9 video posted to TikTok gets cropped to 9:16. The same video on Twitter cuts to 1:1 in the timeline. Anything outside the central safe area can vanish without warning. Frame as if every shot will be cropped four different ways by tomorrow's platforms. (It will.)
Always, for text, faces, and critical action. Especially for multi-platform distribution.
Never skip it. Even narrative film should respect safe areas for theatrical-to-streaming conversion.

80% of the frame. Text lives here. Outside it, characters get clipped on legacy displays.
Letterbox or pillar bars masking part of the frame. Used to fake aspect ratios or hide ugly edges.
