Room tone is the silence of a specific room. It isn't actually silent - every room has its own ambient noise floor: HVAC hum, faint traffic, the refrigerator three rooms over, the room's own resonance. Every room has a sound, and that sound is what you record when you record "room tone."

You record 30 seconds before you wrap a location. The mixer asks for it; everyone shuts up; you roll. That 30 seconds will save your editor hundreds of hours. Need to patch a gap where a take cuts to silence and reveals the cut? Room tone. Need to bridge ADR? Room tone. Need to extend a beat at the end of a take? Room tone.

Skip it on the day and you'll regret it in post. The audience can't hear room tone consciously - they can absolutely hear its absence. A jump from breathing-room-noise to dead silence reads as a glitch, every time.

WHEN TO USE

Always. On every location. Before you wrap.

WHEN NOT TO USE

Never skip recording it. Skip using it only when the scene specifically needs total silence as a creative choice.
