The commercial spot is the 15-second, 30-second, or 60-second ad - and pound-for-pound it is the hardest piece of video writing in any format. Every second has to do three things: brand, message, retain. Most spots fail at at least one.
The fundamental problem is that ads interrupt. The viewer didn't ask for this. They are mentally one step away from skipping. So every spot's first three seconds are doing double duty - they're the hook and they're the brand promise simultaneously. Whiff the hook and the spot is over before it started.
Modern social ads are an even more brutal form of the same problem. A YouTube pre-roll can be skipped at 5 seconds; a TikTok ad can be swiped at any moment. The craft of writing for that environment is closer to writing a great single line of dialogue than to writing a film.
Brand advertising. Performance marketing. Anywhere paid distribution is the model.
Long-form storytelling. Organic content where the audience opted in.

Platform-native paid creative. Hook in 1 second or lose the click.
Unsolicited proof-of-concept ad. Portfolio piece.
Promotional video for a product, event, or service. The catch-all commercial format.
60–150 second cut promoting a longer piece. Modern trailers spoil too much.
